This was something new to deal with for their management and publicity team. Services such as YouTube and Twitter saw the band and their music connect and reach people in a way no one could have ever imagined. When One Direction was starting to take off, so did a side of social media. It was almost as though they were human beings with emotions and thoughts, and not just entertainment puppets. Suddenly, you saw five guys talking, having fun between friends, allowing their personality and passion to shine through. However, every week of the competition, each contestants had to post video diaries. I expected the same when I saw Harry, Louis, Niall, Zayn and Liam at the judges houses on the X-Factor. It was all too polished and orchestrated for my taste. I myself was always sceptical of boybands and found them a bit silly - the coordinated outfits, the dramatic but in synch dance routines, the seductive looks into the camera. Boy bands have been around for several decades before One Direction was ever put on the map. However, whenever I look up anything related to them, my page always ends up being filled with articles which can be summed up to “ ONE DIRECTION REUNION”.Īt first glance, there does not seem to be anything revolutionary about a group of attractive young boys singing primarily love songs directed to a girl, seemingly yourself. It has been 5 years and three months (but who’s counting) since One Direction went on, what many people believe to be, their permanent hiatus. ![]()
